Thomas and Thomas Horizon Series Fly Fishing Rods

For more than a decade, our Horizon series has been the stalwart of the T&T lineup; the rods of choice for a large number of T&T fans. These are the anglers who will fish “nothing but a Horizon”; to whom rod selection is narrowed to one choice!

It is difficult to improve upon such a rod, yet this was made possible through the use of Thomas & Thomas’ BAFT (Bi-Angular Fiber Technology) graphite system. Previously utilized in the design of our Helix rod series, this technology overwhelmingly proved to be a formula for improvement in any rod taper.

The new Horizon II series uses our proven Horizon tapers with the added benefit of the Thomas & Thomas BAFT Technology. So, voila; a brighter Horizon. We have just made a great rod better; a perfect rod with improved strength and performance.

BAFT™ - A Step Beyond

T&T introduces to the fly fishing industry, a superior rod construction of double helical graphite fibers known as BAFT (Bi-Angular Fiber Technology).

Thomas and Thomas Baft Technology

Figure 1

When conventional (non-helical) rods are subjected to heavy flex loads, they tend to become oval, losing rod action and strength.

Figure 2

The single helical graphite structure keeps the rod blank round when it is heavily loaded during casting and while fighting a hooked fish. However, graphite fibers are more easily stretched than compressed. Ordinary helical rod designs utilize a single continuous fiber which spirals at an angle for the length of the part, similar to a coil spring. Therefore, torque or twisting is not inhibited equally in both directions of rotation or twist. Yet, torque loads from twisting rods can result in a less accurate line trajectory and reduced performance.

Figure 3

Our new Bi-Angular Fiber Technology of left and right opposing rotational fibers inhibits torque or twisting in both directions of rotation. Combining superior taper designs with T&T’s BAFT construction and the strategic use of Aramid fiber enables the creation of a rod blank with increased strength, power and lightness and a heightened feel of the line beyond the rod tip.
