REVIEWS Excerpts from Fly Fisherman Magazine's September, 2001
*** "Holbrook immediately sets the tone of 'Midge Magic' with his
surprisingly nontechnical approach to fishing tactics and tackle."
*** "Holbrook's advice on nymphing is accurate as much for technique
as it is a tonic for the obsessiveness of our sport: 'Watch the line,
but don't stare at it. It can mesmerize you. You could lose your footing,
and you'll miss the birds and trees and other nice things around you.
In other words, relax. You're here to enjoy yourself.'"
*** "Midge guru Ed Koch pipes up in these chapters to provide the
angler who wants more technical talk some more information on gear-related
issues, and his input balances the chapters nicely."
*** "This book teaches by doing, and the extensive journal entries
and imitative patterns provide a model for the ambitious angler to follow,
though the author doesn't force this model on the reader. The chapter,
'Matching the Midge' begins, 'To start with, I'm not going to tell you
that you have to do this.' This is all part of the book's power--the
author earns your ear with content, not volume."
ABOUT THE AUTHORS
No one has studied midges more intently than Don Holbrook. For 25 years
he has scoured the limestone streams of central Pennsylvania, gathering
and cataloging specimens, studying them under the microscope, and creating
patterns to match every nuance of color, structure, and size. No one
is as adept at fishing midges as Ed Koch, who literally wrote the book
on the subject. Holbrook and Koch here combine to present the definitive
work on tying and fishing the tiny naturals with which you can catch
trout virtually all year long.
Don Holbrook has a degree in chemistry from Marshall University and
works in water purification. This is his first book. Ed Koch, author
of Fishing the Midge, and co-author of Terrestrials and Basic Fly
Tying, is a fly-fishing guide, writer, and lecturer. |
