Permit On a Fly - Jack Samson

Permit On a Fly - Jack SamsonLanding a permit on a fly is one of angling's greatest challenges. The fish - which lives in tropical flats from the Bahamas and the Florida Keys to Honduras and the Yucatan Peninsula - is notoriously difficult to locate, easily spooked, and a hard and fast fighter when hooked.

Veteran angler and author Jack Samson has accepted the challenge of fly fishing for permit. In this book, he presents lively, sun-splashed accounts of his attempts to find, hook, and land the tropical game fish. His efforts take him to some of the world's most scenic fishing spots: Deep Water Cay, Turneffe Flats, Ascension Bay, Pez Maya and others. He offers practical advice on tackle and technique and a discussion of the most effective permit patterns, as well as an examination of the mystique that surrounds the unique species.

"There is no type of fishing where Murphy's Law applies more," says Samson. "If anything can go wrong in fly fishing for permit, believe me, it will. I know lifelong saltwater fly rodders who have never caught permit. They have caught hundreds of bonefish, dozens of tarpon, snook, barracuda, and even mutton snapper on a fly, but have never landed or boated a permit. Have they cast to permit? Sure - hundreds!"

Despite the odds, scores of fly rodders are addicted to fight the permit. In this book, Samson introduces some of these dedicated anglers, including "permit specialist" Gordon Hill, who practices the sport with scholarly diligence; Mike Hinzey, one of many skilled and resourceful experts who help other anglers accomplish the near impossible; and Nat Ragland, A.J. McClane, Del Brown, Joe Brooks, Chuck Walton, and the others who pioneered the sport.

Samson reveals their secrets, offering instructions for tying nine proven permit flies, presenting photos of prize catches and successful casts, and discussing in detail the habits and habitat of the permit - where it lives, how it feeds and the best ways to catch it.

But he doesn't guarantee you'll ever land one. "Unlike bonefishing, fly fishing for permit can involve weeks, months, even years without success," he notes. Still, the reward of hooking and boating one of the most elusive saltwater game fish in the world is well worth the wait. "When the great day comes, there is no such thing as a small permit on a fly."
